Christian Presence In Macau |
|
|
|
Macau,
the Special Administrative Region of China since December 1999, is
strategically located at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta. Macau has
intimate ties with China, resulting in tens of million of people crossing
the Macau-Zhuhai border every year.
Robert Morrison, the first protestant missionary to China,
arrived in Macau in 1807, making this city his base and gateway to
China. Although the gospel has been in Macau for approximately 200 years
to date, the Chinese Christian community remains small ¡V an average of
3800 meeting every Sunday in 67 churches. With only less than one
percent being Christian in a city of about half a million people, and
coupled with the fact that more than half of the churches are still led
by pastors originated from Hong Kong and overseas, there is a continual
need for more local Chinese Christian workers.
As Macau has her own unique historical background, political
system, economic structure, and cultural heritage, it is therefore not
only appropriate but also strategic to train pastors and equip the laity
on local grounds. Such local training is instrumental both to Macau
church growth, and in meeting the gospel needs in the greater China. |
